Like Mondial and Gilera, Moto Guzzi had withdrawn from the road racing World Championship after 1957. They nevertheless wanted to remain active in the sporting field, and in addition, they still had the sports department, where Giulio Cesare Carcano, Enrico Cantoni and Umberto Todaro worked as development engineers.
They threw themselves into the International Six Days Trial, a series of gruelling tests of machine, rider skill, and reliability for the 'Regolaristi' riding their off-road machines. With a few adjustments, the Moto Guzzi Lodola was combat-ready in 1958. The Six Days Trials models were equipped with stronger front forks, vertical rear shock absorber with external coil springs, higher handlebars, raised mudguards and exhausts, studded "trials" tires and more sturdy saddle.
These machines were used by Gianfranco Saini, Sergio Cremaschini and Brunone Villa in the Trofeo Reda in Bergamo. This competition was considered a test and formed the basis for the machines of the following years.
Two versions appeared in 1959: the Regolarità 175 and the Regolarità 235. The 175 received larger wheels, a reinforced frame, an airbox for the carburettor, a quickly exchangeable tank and a folding kick-starter. Later the machine received a reinforced steering head and a shortened swing arm to improve handling.
