Qu’est-ce qu’un motocyde ?.....
Si nous re' ournons ce mot, nous trouvons « cycle à moteur », et, en réalité, cet appareil n’est rien autre chose qu’un vélocipède pourvu d’une machine motrice. L’instrument que ce mot désigne n’est pas une voiture : c’est un cycle dans lequel l’énergie musculaire du cavalier est remplacée par une force motrice étrangère, par le jeu d’un moteur mécanique tirant sa puissance de l’explosion d’un mélange gazeux.

A notre humble avis, de même qu’à celui de beaucoup d’autres personnes, le véritable motocycle par définition ne devrait pas être autre chose qu’un vélocipède, instrument de promenade et d’exercice avant tout, muni d’une machine motrice simple et légère, et seulement destinée à soulager le cycliste dans les moments où ce dernier sent l’utilité de l’addition à sa propre force d’une énergie étrangère. Contrairement à ce programme, le motocycle est un instrument hybride, qui rappelle le vélocipède par son apparence et les pédales qu’il comporte, et la voiture automobile, par son mécanisme et son moteur souvent trop puissant, ce qui est bien inutile, enfin par tout son appareillage délicat.

If we turn this word around, we find "motor cycle", and, in reality, this device is nothing else than a velocipede provided with a driving machine. Unlike this program, the motorcycle is a hybrid instrument, reminiscent of the velocipede by its appearance and the pedals it has, and the motor car, by its mechanism and its motor often too powerful, this which is quite useless, finally by all its delicate equipment.
