Designed by Gio Ponti, the Brio was produced with a choice of two engine capacities, 48cc or 100cc. The fan-cooled, two-stroke engine featured a cast aluminium shroud to direct cooling air around the cylinder barrel and head. It is coupled to a three-speed gearbox with gear shifting achieved via a twist grip on the handlebar. The 100cc engine was also fitted to the Ducati Mountaineer, and the 48cc version was fitted to their lightweight 48/50cc SL range.
Ducati had previously produced the 175cc Cruiser scooter from 1952 to 1954.
