Walter was the importer for the French Jewell sidecars. When Jewell folded, Walter took over in 1988 and produced them in both France and Germany. Walter also took over the Jeaniel sidecar marque. In 1992 they acquired the rights to Stoye.
The firm built combinations based on the Moto Guzzi Mille GT and California, along with a BMW K100 machine. In later years the focus shifted to Harley-Davidson, and sidecar models for these were named Freeway King, Side Glide, Freeway Roadster and Yukon.
The German company produced a wide range of sidecars, the best sellers being replica Steib TR500 models N3 and N4.
Options for their creations included a steerable sidecar wheel, and a swinger sidecar was also on offer.
In 2005 Ulrich von Zech and Andreas Rödiger became the new owners of Walter.
SidecarPassion has a rather good piece on Walter which states that "the exotic Jeaniel Captain II or Condor or the wide Jewell family boats, also originally French developments, sometimes make the not exactly slender G seem almost small. The large tops and windshields suggest the drag coefficient of a refrigerator."
