A Brief History of the Marque
Jaime Colomet of Palma de Mallorca worked with Chevrolet in the United States in the 1940s whilst studying engineering.
He returned to Mallorca with some years later and put his technical skills and his savings to good use. With his his brother Antonio, Jaime Colomet set up a workshop on Honderos Street in Palma, where they manufactured a variety of devices: marine engines, gas generators and also motorcycles. Their first was 45cc motorised bicycle, built in 1949.
Based on the BSA Bantam, in 1951 a motorcycle appeared, the 123cc M51 with a 3 speed foot-change gearbox, cradle frame and telescopic forks. Quite an advanced model for the day, it had a claimed top speed of 75 km/h. Tyres were 275x19 front and 300x19 rear.
This was followed by 50cc and 150cc models.
Total production appears to have been in the vicinity of 500 machines, the last being manufactured in 1955. Government records only show around 200 units, but it seems that the law did not require registration of the smaller models.
Mallorca (Majorca) is a small Spanish island in the Mediterranean, and is home to several different motorcycle marques, among them BMS and Coronat.
Notes.
1. It has been suggested that some of the Colomet machines were in fact rebadged BSA Bantams, smuggled onto the island to avoid taxes. Certainly a comparison with the '51 Bantam lends credence to this. There was a similar situation with the Jimbell.
