Germania Motorcycles

Produced from 1901 to 1908

These were Laurin & Klement machines built under licence at the Seidel & Naumann sewing machine factory in Dresden, which had built bicycles since about 1892. Models included singles and V-twins from 2½ to 6hp.

It seems the motorcycles and tricars including commercial utilities were marketed under both the Laurin & Klement and Germania names, and also as S & N. This latter marque may have been built at the Germania factory in Jungbunzlau (now Mlada Boleslav, Czechia) which produced Erika typewriters.

Seidel left the company in 1876. Naumann had planned to build his own motorcycles but he died in 1903. Production of the licenced L & K machines ceased in 1908.

An example of the S & N is in the collection of the Chemnitz museum.

In 1905 the firm produced an automobile, model 34/40 hp.

Dear sirs,

Seidel & Naumann was primarily sewing machine factory, later they added bicycles, typewriters, calculating machines and even speedometers for locomotives. They offered quite modern singles in beginning of 1904, but for some reason which is not clear - could be they not sold one, were unreliable... - they in the end of September 1904 (!!!) signed licence agreement with Laurin & Klement to build, in that time quite outdated, L&K singles and twin, which were very reliable and proved by victories in many international races. Agreement was effective until November 1907.

Jungbuzlau is German name for Mlada Boleslav, where was factory of L&K (now Skoda), they really did not produced typewriters

Picture of Germania on your site is from Munich technical museum, probably 1904/1905, because in 1904 it was new in L&K catalogue
