A Brief History of the Marque
Manufactured by Geier-Werke, 1932~1959
The operation commenced with Ernst Upmeier opening a small bicycle shop in Lengerich (Westfalen), Auf der Laar 14, in 1911. The first motorcycles were built in 1932 using 74cc Sachs engines, and later he built commercial and passenger tricycles some of which were fitted with JLO and DKW engines.
During the war the factory made grenades.
Post-war production of motorcycles, mopeds and commercial tricycles (motor-dreirad) resumed in 1948, with much of the motorcycle output marketed by Neckermann Versand badged with the Torpedo marque. The Geier-Motri dreirad was fitted with a 145cc 3-speed JLO engine and was used for goods transportation and also as a taxi. It was produced until 1951.
The Geier was marketed as the Safari in Britain.
"In the new Safari moped, introduced at the 1958 Earls Court Show, Stuart and Payne Ltd. appear to have a real winner, for this German machine - powered by the well-tried Sachs engine in either two- or three-speed forms - offers a superb performance, coupled with a simplicity of design which argues both durability and freedom from adjustments."
Geier-Werke ceased motorcycle production around 1959 and became bankrupt in 1968.
