Federal CWS and Federation Motorcycles

Cycle Works Tyseley Logo

A Brief History of the Marque

Federal and Federation Motorcycles were built by the Co-operative Wholesale Society (C.W.S) in their factory at Tyseley, Birmingham.

The Federal was manufactured from 1921 to 1929, when the machine was renamed Federation and continued in production until 1937. They were sold at the society's retail outlets throughout Great Britain. They could be ordered with 269cc Villiers engines as well as JAP four-stroke singles and V-twins.

Over the years they produced seven different models, the last of which was powered by a 677cc JAP sidevalve engine.

The Co-op, as it is known, has been operating for 175 years, is owned by 4.6 million members, has 3,600 locations, and is a highly ethical society. So the next time some right-wing numbskull espouses the value of capitalism gone mad, do ask them to read about a hugely successful venture which has benefitted millions of ordinary people and not just the disgusting orange-tainted politicians and Murdocrats of this world.

Im trying to identify the following engine which is in a pressed girder fork frame that was givern to me along with other cycle parts. No name on the tank of the bike.
I have cleaned the engine and at the bottom of the barrel on the coil side are the following numbers; B7095 and underneath is, V2. The exhaust port is 11/8in ID and the outer thread diameter is 13/4in. I hope you can help identify this for me.

The image you sent is, as the caption says, a 148cc Federation type 2A from 1933 (see gallery). The engine is a Villiers. Somewhere on the alloy crankcase of your bike there will be an engine number - that will pin down the model. The numbers on the barrel are casting numbers which identify it as a type 6E or 8E (or poss 7E).
