Maico announced a new 125cc road bike, the MD125, at the 1966 Cologne Show, and this formed the basis for a production racer and their own works 125.
Prototypes were run during 1967-68, and the machine entered the sales catalogue at the beginning of 1969. The new machine had a duplex full cradle frame equipped with Ceriani forks and a swinging arm rear end. A Maico twin leading shoe front brake was complimented by single leading shoe rear. The air cooled 125cc single cylinder two-stroke produced a claimed 21 bhp and featured rotary valve induction and was built in unit with a six speed gearbox.
The new model quickly proved itself with Kent Anderson taking fourth place in the 1969 125 World Championship.
