József Bory was born in 1876 in Aba, near Székesfehérvár, a city 60 km south-west of Budapest. The son of a blacksmith. József learned his craft at his father's shop and by 1901 he was a trained mechanic and blacksmith.
Around 1903 he built his first motorcycle and later he received a grant which enabled him to travel to Germany where he worked at Berliner Motorwagen Fabrik. He returned to Hungary in 1906 and based on his experience, he set a goal to establish his own automobile factory. He applied for government subsidy and in the application form he claimed that he was able to build 3-4 motorcycles a year. In 1908 he built a small automobile, a one-off - no further automobiles were constructed. Probably fewer than 10 Bory Compact motorcycles were built.
